Don Lucas

Don Lucas, native of Falls Church, Virginia, was educated as a Fulbright Scholar to London’s Guildhall School of Music (Premiere Prix Diploma), Texas Tech University (M.M.& B.M.), North Texas State University, the University of Houston (Doctoral work) and Berklee College of Music. He has performed recitals and taught masterclasses in the UK, Russia, France, Austria, Australia and South Korea. In the U.S., he has featured as a soloist at various locations throughout the country. Lucas has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (3 seasons), the Empire Brass Quintet, Santa Fe Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, and the New Mexico Symphony. Principal commissions and/or world premieres include solos by Fisher Tull, Derek Bourgeouis, Franz Cibulka, Henk Badings, Eddie Bass, Roussanova Lucas, Gary D. Belshaw Mary Jeanne van Appledorn and Adam Gorb. His solo recordings include Hymns for Trombone, Don Lucas (1988) and Cantabile, Don Lucas (2003).

Lucas' honors include the only Premeir Prix Diploma ever awarded to a brass player in the history of the Guildhall School of Music (London); listing in Marquis, Who's Who in America Music; Bronze Medal L’unamite, Finalist—Toulon International Solo Competition; First Prize Winner—International Trombone Association Frank Smith International Trombone Solo Competition; First Place "Fellow"—Harmony Ridge Brass Festival; First Place Solo and Group competitions—National Christian Artists Seminar; and First Prize with the American Classic Trombone Quartet—Summit Brass International Brass Chamber Group Competition. He is Artist/Teacher of Trombone at Texas Tech University. Previous teaching appointments include Eastern New Mexico University, Sam Houston State University and the public schools of Virginia, Texas and North Carolina. (Edwards)
